Blistering Glaws get Euro campaign off to a flyer

Iain Balshaw - try
By Cherry O'Picker November 10 2007
Gloucester fans were waiting for the team to hit form after three games without a win, and they did it in spectacular style at Ulster’s Ravenhill, producing one of the most amazing starts to a Heineken Cup game in the competition’s history. They won 32-14, but were always in control and could have stepped on the gas further if necessary.

Glaws had clinched the bonus point with just over a quarter of the game gone, and were able to ease off the gas in a second half which amazingly produced only three points, after 43 in the first.
Les celebrates tryLesley Vainikolo (right) led the charge with the opening try after a clever kick from Ryan Lamb, who scored the third after Big Les made the space. In between, Mike Tindall had been sent over by Iain Balshaw.
Then it was Lamb’s turn to create, his interception giving James Simpson-Daniel a try, Balshaw scoring the fifth after a turnover to kill off Ulster.
The home team replied with converted tries from Matt McCullough and Paddy Wallace, but the game was always with Glaws, and they coasted home.
Coach Dean Ryan said: "We've got enormous challenges ahead with the Ospreys coming to Kingsholm next week.
"Today was a good image of us getting confidence into our game and doing what we wanted to do.
"I wasn't surprised by the way we played in that opening period and really, I thought we were outstanding."
Lamb, for many the Glaws man of the match, added: "We've learnt lessons from last season's Heineken Cup and we came here and showed our experience.
"You expect a physical contest at Ravenhill and we kept the ball away from their forwards which helped us.
"It is fantastic to get off to this start but we can't get carried away and we need to see what we can do better." Next it’s Ospreys at Kingsholm on Friday night for another Sky match – on this form, it’s easy to see why Glaws are so popular with the telly lot.

Gloucester Balshaw; Simpson-Daniel, Tindall, Allen (Morgan, 76), Vainikolo; Lamb (Paterson, 74), Lawson (Prendergast, 80); Nieto, Azam (Titterrell, 40), Wood (Califano, 80), Brown, Buxton (capt), Strokosch (Bortolami, 52), Qera, Narraway (Delve, 62).

JUST a mention for Belfast, Ulster as a club and Ravenhill – what wonderful places and great hosts. Pity they are struggling, but based on hospitality and many other off-the-pitch rugby values, they would be top of any league.
