By Cherry Picker November 28 2007 Gloucester fans are split over whether coach Dean Ryan’s team changes are preventing the team from hitting top form this season. Ryan has made it clear he intends to use the strength in depth of the Kingsholm squad as the team battles for success in domestic and European competitions.
In the latest Shedloads poll, we asked whether fans believed those changes are preventing the team hitting top form. We weren’t exactly snowed under with responses, but there were enough to use for a snapshot of fans’ views on the situation. At one time, those who voted yes, the changes did have a negative affect on performances, were a long way ahead of those who felt they did not. But as we closed the pool, it was very close – 52 per cent said yes, and 48 per cent said no.Ryan, of course, arguably has the best squad in the Premiership available to him, and is keen to make full use of that strength in depth. At the same time, though, he and the fans want he team to hit the sort of consistent rhythm which could eliminate the sort of nervous performances which featured the first half of last weekend’s home game against Harlequins and has cropped up in one or two other matches this season. For now, though, the fans appear to agree to differ on the affect of the changes.
There was always going to be wobbly spells as players get used to each other. I would hope that the players will be used to each other now and Glaws will kick on in the HC and GP from here on in. I still think its a season too early for HC success but the GP via those bleedin playoffs is a realistic target.
Thats why there is massive pressure to succeed. If Glaws are winning trophies then players will want to stay but if they bob along as losing finalists then top players will soon get fed up and move on, especially as most are on relatively short contracts.
