Luke Narraway - 5th try
It’s generally being called a hard-fought win, but it could also be described as a stuttering performance against a side that refused to lie down, despite being out of the competition already.
Now Glaws face a tie against Munster on the weekend of April 4-6.
Saracens are at home to Ospreys, who qualified as runners-up in Gloucester’s pool, London Irish entertain Perpignan and Cardiff Blues are at home to Toulouse, who have won the title three times.
Mike Tindall created the first Glaws try, sending Akapusi Qera over, before Tommy Bowe scored for Ulster. Alasdair Strokosch touched down from close-range, though, and Glaws were 14-7 in front at half-time.
In the second half, Glaws still weren’t at their best and Bowe created their second try for Andrew Trimble and the conversion made it 14-all.
There was more than a hint of desperation about Glaws, and more than a hint of nerves in the crowd, but as the game entered the last quarter Lesley Vainikolo was tackled well by Bowe, but Qera went over again to mark this week’s contract extension with two tries.
A great pass from replacement Ryan Lamb found JSD and he and Big Les made the ground for Iain Balshaw’s try (above) that earned the bonus point. But the ten-point lead was cut to three when Bowe scored his second, and only a last-minute try from Luke Narraway, sent over by Lamb, eased the nerves, though Lamb did miss a relatively easy conversion.
The Munster game is going to be a massive occasion, but if they play like they did against Ulster, Glaws will probably go out of the competition. But they need to get back to their best as soon as possible, because there's a lot of urgent Premiership business to attend to before then, starting at home to Wasps on Saturday.
