By Cherry Picker March 6 2008 England’s offhand treatment of James Simpson-Daniel spells good news for Gloucester as one of the world’s best attacking players is available for Saturday evening’s Kingsholm game against London Irish on a day when most Guinness Premiership clubs are without their international stars. To say Sinbad is welcome in the Glaws team is an understatement.
He was called up for just two days by England coach Brian Ashton (right) before being dumped for the weekend game against Scotland, and to his credit he has shown remarkable restraint in his comments on the situation. Glaws coach Dean Ryan has been slightly more outspoken, and he told the Citizen: “Only people completely in the circle know what happened, but I'm bemused by why he was taken in there. "They are talking about having a squad and keeping a squad - then to bring him in but not to involve him at all seems a bit strange. "I'm not party to conversations, but it looks strange from the outside and it looks strange given the form of Sinbad at the moment, which is key. "I feel for him because he hasn't had the easiest England ride and this makes it more complicated for him, which is hard." At a time when many people would be tempted to tell Brian Ashton where he can stick his white shirt with the go-fast stripes, JSD has shown what a well brought-up lad and true professional he is by saying: “Of course I'm disappointed not to be in the 22, but at the same time I'm happy to be included in the initial squad. Brian had a long chat with me about what he is thinking. I've got detailed feedback from him. "I've just got to keep working hard and hopefully I will be involved in future."But it must be galling for him to be sent home and a day later read that Danny Cipriani has messed up his England chances by being seen leaving a London nightclub after the England curfew. One top professional with a brilliant attitude is rejected while a 20-year-old with an alleged bright future behaves like a daft kid. There's no justice, is there? In the meantime, he’ll be available to help Glaws attempt to put their recent hiccups behind them against middle-of-the-table Irish, who were the first team to beat Glaws in the GP this season way back in October. After three defeats in their last four games, Glaws want a win in front of their own fans, and Sinbad will be hoping that he can play a part in a much-needed revival.
I would love J S-D to spill the beans on what Arseton said he had to do to be involved. I really do feel for the bloke but credit to Sinbad, if that had been me I would of told Arseton where he could swing low his sweet chariot from ages ago.
