Great effort in defeat keeps Glaws moving forward

Willie Walker
By Cherry Picker March 15 2008
Gloucester lost at Sale despite a superhuman effort from a team packed with inexperienced young players. They kept going until the end and grabbed a bonus point with a late penalty try and Willie Walker's vital conversion, a point that satisfied Glaws coach Dean Ryan after watching his team match a home side packed with experience.

Charlie Hodgson was man of the match for Sale, who paraded a galaxy of other big-name stars in an absorbing game and Ryan told the BBC: "He (Hodgson) is a world-class player and his tactical kicking was very clever.
"But I think at a period like this, when so many of our players are missing, that we have to be happy with a bonus point."
So the Six Nations series is over and Glaws will take stock of the bumps and bruises picked up by international players over the weekend and have two weeks to prepare for the vital derby match at Worcester in a fortnight, followed by the big one, the Heineken Cup clash with Munster at Kingsholm a week later.
As international players return to the club next week, it's a chance for Ryan and the coaching staff to take stock after this latest demonstration of the huge strength in depth at the club and the massive potential in the hands of a string of top young players.
There's no doubt the stars will be back for the Munster game, and some will be there against Worcester, too, because it's important that after four defeats in six games, Glaws make the best of their returning stars and get back on track for the vital last few weeks of the season.
The Six Nations series has tested the club's strength in depth and young promise for the long-term future.
Now, with the internationals over, Gloucester's potential for winning trophies is about to be tested as well.
They topped the table last season - everybody connected with the club will be wanting to do better than that this time round. The Munster game is big, but with only five GP matches left, so is the visit to Sixways.
