Awards prove it - Glaws are the best

JSD - top man
By Cherry Picker May 30 2008
It's official - Gloucester have the best back, the best forward and the best coach in the Guinness Premiership - and those honours beg the question, how come they aren't in the play-off final after finishing top of the table again? The awards were handed out at the GP Player of the Season ceremony held, strangely enough, at the home of Chelsea Football Club in West London.

Glaws players were first and third in the top award list, and a player heading for Kingsholm next season was second.
James Simpson-Daniel was named Player of the Season, while Akapusi Qera finished third. Bath's Ollie Barklay was second.
Dean Ryan was named coach of the year.
The award was fitting reward for Sinbad after yet another outstanding season for Glaws. He finished the campaign with ten tries in 18 GP matches.
After surgery on his shoulder injury during the summer, he'll be determined to do even better next season.
QeraQ, meanwhile, was third in the poll at the end of his first season in the Premiership. The Fijian (right) quickly established himself as a fist-choice player and impressed more than just the Glaws fans with his form during the season.
The chances are, with a campaign at the top under his belt, he could be even better next season - if that's possible.
Ryn got his award after Glaws were top of the GP table in all but one week of the season and reached the semi-finals of the Heineken Cup.
It says everything for the club's potential and ambition that many people at Kingsholm were disappointed with the season.
JSD told the Citizen: "I'm delighted to pick up an award like this because it shows I've had a good season. To see Dean win something as well is nice, but it doesn't make up for not winning any silverware.
"But you only get awards like this if you are playing in a good team. It was just a shame we couldn't finish with a trophy."
So why didn't Glaws win a trophy? Only the players and Ryan can answer that questiopn with any egree of accuracy - but they'll be back in September determined to do better.
Ryan has said for some time that his squad is still developing, but he knows that the play-off semi-final defeat againt Leicester was avoidable, and that's the sort of slip-up he'll be keen to do without in 2008-09.

Re: Awards prove it - Glaws are the best
We missed out in the play-offs because we are not quite streetwise enough. But the extra season's experience will hopefully put that right and next season we'll be there again .... I hope.
