Hope springs eternal

The mood around Sixways at the moment boarders from “we’ve only played two at home in the league, and could / should have won one or both” to “here we go again, why can’t we play winning rugby”, I’m a firm believer in the former, and having witnessed Wuss win in Wycombe for the first time, think that a run of wins in the GP is just around the corner.

What a difference 9 months make, Wuss make the journey to Stockport on the 29th February 2008, having lost 13 of their first 14 games in the league that season, and doom and gloom was rife amongst the faithful. Leeds (the team fancied for the drop) had already beaten Wuss at Headingley, and they had also lost to Newcastle, and Sale, by the handsome score of 15-34 at Sixways in a game where Luke McAlister introduced himself with a good game and a couple of monstrous penalties landed from halfway.

Surely they were heading to the North West to be put to the sword by a team gunning for the GP title, 4th in the league, with 9 wins from 13 so far in the season, but Rugby is “a funny old game”.

Worcester fought like men possessed on a cold and gloomy night, and claimed a famous victory, by scoring the “try of the season”, when Shane Drahm danced his way from underneath his own posts to halfway, a long pass to Miles Benjamin saw the 19 year old take the ball into contact and secure possession, Matt Powell then floated a beautiful cross field kick to be flicked back just into play by the star of the show, Marcel Garvey (who covered every blade of Edgeley Park that night) to Kai Hortsman who ran into the corner with the Sale defence trying desperately to get back, but unable to stop the superb move.

The only problem with the try was that it came a little early in the game and Wuss had to defend their lines for 60 minutes, which other than 3 penalties converted, they managed to do to record a famous victory (many still believe this is Worcester greatest ever win) 15-22 and set up a final third of the season which saw them gain 5 wins and a draw from their final 7 games.

Can Wuss go to Sale and win again this year, who knows, but Sale will be missing their International contingent, and Wuss are going for three wins in a row at EP, so it’s set up nicely, and as its says at the top . . . . . .

Hope springs eternal!

Re: Hope springs eternal
Hope does indeed sring eternal and our famous victory at EP last season should raise confidence for our visit next Friday.

I too am one of those that firmly believes that we are a better team/squad in November 2008 than we were at the same time last year. However, it would appear from reading the postings following last Saturday's game in particular, a growing section of our support seem to think otherwise. Due to business commitments I was unable to attend the Quins game, so was reliant upon this board for news and comment. I must say that the majority appeared to fall into the dismayed and disappointed categories. We can and should all become disappointed at particular results but to be dismayed is something else. There are problems, of course they are, but let us at all times try to put things into better perspective. Try to remember where we have come from in ten short years. Try to look at the phenominal progress that has been made both on and off the field in those ten years. And look at the talent that we now have at our disposal, both in playing terms and backrom staff. Two yaers from now will, I believe see many of our younger players blossoming into major contributors to the successful performance of the club as we start to move up the GP table.

Perhaps the process will start this coming Friday at EP. Lets hope so. But in case it doesn't lets just try to remember where we have come from and the ambitions of those who will, I believe, get us there in the years to come.

Like your style NM1.

We are, at the moment, OK. Not fantastic, but not awful as many would have it. For some reason a good number seem to want to either praise the team to the skys, or bash them with a mallett, and are not interested in the middle ground.

And that is exactly where we are at the moment.

IMHO.
