This was an efficient, effective but ultimately one-sided match with the visitors having little penetration and never threatening the Harlequins’ line with any real chance of success.
Quins opened the scoring with a well-struck penalty from full back Ross Chisholm after eight minutes. For much of the next twenty minutes play was largely inconclusive in the area between the twenty-two metre lines, with neither side able to break through and with the visitors showing no invention in attack. The young Quins side defended well. Their attacks were well defended and came to nothing. It was not until well into the second quarter that Quins were able to increase their score. A good attack with the ball moved smartly and skilfully right found an overlap for Seb Stegmann to exploit and he touched down for the try. Chisholm converted from wide out. 10 – 0.
But it was in the last five minutes of the first half that Harlequins opened the scoring floodgates with three tries in five minutes. First, from a lineout on the right the ball came into midfield and a smart inside pass found Seb Jewell cutting through the Bristol defence at speed to score by the posts. Next, with Quins were immediately on the attack, a rather sloppily passed ball reached Stegmann who beat two tacklers for his second try. Finally an excellent break by George Robson set up an attack that pushed Bristol back to their line and Barry scored in the left corner. Chisholm converted two of the tries. The half time score was 29 – 0
Much of the second half was again spent in midfield with both sides seeking advantage but being frustrated by unforced errors, turnovers and an increasingly frequent whistle. About fifteen minutes into the half, Bristol were awarded a scrum in the left corner five metres from the Quins’ line. The scrum had be reset on a number of occasions, was turned and a knock-on brought another scrum. The visitors had a free kick for an infringement and called for another scrum. Bristol then had a penalty and took another scrum. The ball was not yet put in when the whistle blew again and Bristol was awarded a penalty try! That was as near as the visitors came to scoring through the match.
It was Harlequins who wrapped up the scoring and the match finally as De Wet Barry intercepted a loose pass and outpaced the defence over sixty metres for his second try which Luveniyali converted.
This was an opportunity for the Academy players and some youngsters still at school to show their abilities and their progress. There are some excellent prospects among them. Seb Stegmann continued to show speed and ability and on the other wing Sam Smith has grown and matured and is a good prospect. Seb Jewell looked much more at home at centre than he does at fly-half and his try was the pick of the bunch.
