Strangely enough it was one of the Gloucester stars who had been dropped who played a leading role in the victory, Olly Barkley going on for the injured Anthony Allen after just three minutes and producing the sort of performance that he was signed for.
No wonder coach Dean Ryan was smiling after the game. He told the BBC: “We will make changes next week (against Calvisano in the Heineken Cup) because you can’t afford to have the same 15 players to get you through matches.
"We can’t afford to lose momentum and I would like to keep us on a roll through Christmas.
"For Olly Barkley to enter the fray today was ideal. He is still with England every Monday and Tuesday and then with us, which is why he was on the bench.
"He is going to start next week and this would have been another week to look and watch us but it didn't work that way.
"We still had six players out on international duty and we have benefited from some of the performances made by the youngsters today."
Tries came from Iain Balshaw (right) , Luke Narraway, Barkley and Lesley Vainikolo, with Ryan Lamb converting two and kicking three penalties.
The crowd of 13,495 wasn’t perhaps as good as some people expected, but it wasn’t one of those events sport used to love – a 3-0pm kick-off on a Saturday afternoon, not live on the telly.
If Glaws are going to be on the telly so much, it makes you wonder if it’s really worth expanding and improving Kingsholm – people won’t pay to watch live when they can get it in the boozer for nothing.
Not until they realise that actually going to a match is infinitely better than watching it on the box – especially when Glaws are in this form.
