Glaws will be glad to see the end of 2008

Somerville - eye op

Gloucester's players and management will probably be glad to see the end of 2008 – certainly, many of the club’s fans will be. The first few months were all right, until the GP play-off disappointment, then this season has been a successions of highs and lows when all we are looking for is a touch of consistency.

Then, to put the tin hat on last weekend’s stunning defeat at London Irish, Glaws hear they have lot their latest new signings for a couple of months.
Former All Blacks prop Greg Somerville has hardly had time to get over his jet lag, let alone grow accustomed to the English club game, but he’s been told that he will be out for up to two months after an operation for a detached eye retina.

Happy Christmas to one and all from SHEDLOADS

Somerville had time to admit he and his new team-mates had been well beaten when he told the Citizen: “They outsmarted us with their game plan and their kicking and in the physical battle, too."They definitely outplayed us totally."Good sides learn from experiences like that. You can take your lessons out of it and move on."
If they are to move on, Glaws must do so without Somerville, who picked up the injury in making his full debut against Irish.
Coach Dean Ryan said: "It's unbelievably bad luck, not only for Greg but for the squad because everyone was looking forward to working with him at this crucial stage of the season.
"Our thoughts are with Greg because this is a nasty injury and will take some considerable recovery time. He is at a new club and desperate to make an impact for us, on and off the field as a player and a leader.
"We will obviously miss his contribution as a world class player and we wish him well for a speedy recovery."
But before Gloucester get a chance to start a new year looking for more luck than they have had in 2008, there’s the little matter of Saturday’s GP game at Bristol, when the team will be hoping to bounce back after the Irish setback.
There have been a lot of wounds to lick this week, but a game at Bristol should not be as daunting as last weekend’s was, as long as Glaws approach it properly.
As Skipper Mike Tindall says:
"We have to have the ability to move on. I don't expect us to play that poorly again, or in that way. That's what you have to believe.”
