Ryan will probably go, says Melville

Nigel Melville
By Cherry Picker
May 27 2009
The man who gave Dean Ryan his chance as a coach at Gloucester expects the Kingsholm head coach to lose his job before the start of the new season. Nigel Melville has kicked rumours that he is about to return to the UK at either Wasps or Glaws into touch, but he does expect the Gloucester fans to get their way and Ryan to be booted out.
Currently boss of USA Rugby, Melville makes the claim in his own online blog.
He writes: “I caught up with Dean Ryan, former coaching colleague, friend and current Director of Rugby at Gloucester. Dean is under fire for a poor season - the Gloucester faithful want him out and I suspect they will get their way.
“Imagine the faces of some of the local supporters as Dean and I walked into the coffee bar - guess what - I was on my way back to Gloucester.”
He claims that during a short visit to the UK to renew his US visa and to attend a function at his son’s school in Cheltenham, Melville was also linked with jobs at Wasps and Llanelli.
He added: “Humans cannot help putting two and two together and making five - especially at this time of year in the UK … I have a job to do here in the USA. I will not be going anywhere until my contract expires in 2011.”
If you want further proof that he isn’t heading home, he spells the word rumours as “rumors”.
Say no more.

If he's been talking to DR, I guess this means DR is expecting to go.

I suspect DR is hanging on for compensation because he knows he will struggle to get a job elsewhere without taking a step down to a position such as forwards coach or joining a side in ND1.

"- the Gloucester faithful want him out and I suspect they will get their way ." Sounds to me like an oblique and rather bitter reference to NM's own departure and to where he still feels the blame lay ! Oh that we had that power ! (Sm33)

The irony being that the last few games with Melville in charge were arguably even worse than Glaws' end to last season!

Blaming the supporters is not an unusual ploy, a bit like blaming the media.

DR is running out of options now. Next it is going to be Mystic Meg's fault! "Saturn was not aligned with Mars on the cusp of Capricorn" said Dean Ryan explaining Gloucester's poor end to the previous season
