Now, though, the deed has been done and the big question is: what happens next?
The club statement was simple and to the point: "Gloucester Rugby can today confirm that Director of Rugby Dean Ryan has left the club by mutual consent."The club would like to thank Dean for his contribution over the years and wish him well for the future."
Later it said: “Gloucester Rugby can confirm that, as a result of chairman Tom Walkinshaw’s recent review process, Bryan Redpath has been appointed as the club’s new head coach.”
So, DR goes and BR takes over, but having spent a lot of money on paying Ryan off, is there any left for the squad, or will Redpath have to make do with what he’s got?
Walkinshaw told the Citizen: “As a result of the review process, we identified several areas within the operation which could be improved. I will be happy to expand upon these at a Fans Forum which we will announce in due course.
“However, the most significant finding was that following Dean Ryan’s appointment as director of rugby, we did not recruit a replacement head coach and that this was a major contributing factor in the team’s inconsistent performances on the pitch.
“Accordingly, we have taken immediate action to recruit a head coach for Gloucester Rugby. We did consider bringing in a new head coach from outside the club but we’re looking at evolution and not revolution and feel that Bryan is absolutely the right man for the job.
“Bryan has been at the club now for three seasons. His playing record speaks for itself and, as a coach, he has quickly earned the respect of the playing squad and his peers.
“Bryan is extremely excited to be appointed head coach of such a big club and he will review the squad and add his own stamp in due course.
“He will continue to be supported by Carl Hogg and Denis Betts and I am sure you will join me in wishing him well in his new role.”Of course we will Tom, and hopefully the fans will now get behind Redpath. But let’s get this straight … Ryan was Director of Rugby, but not head coach. In fact, we didn’t have a head coach. So does that mean nobody was coaching the team?If it was as simple as that, why not just promote Redpath to head coach? Or would Ryan not accept that?
Of course there was a coach ... it was Ryan. But results and the team's inconsistency suggested he wasn't doing it right.
Tom, you’ve probably done the right thing, but please don’t try to pull the wool over our eyes … Ryan has been shown the door surely because he was not up to the job. If he had been regarded as good enough, he would still be there.
Don’t blame the fact that there was no head coach for last season’s flop.
TW has said that the biggest question asked was how the team could be brilliant one week and awful the next. Hopefully Redpath will have the answer.
To his eternal credit, Walkinshaw knows that the club needs to tell the fans as much as possible and he outlines his thinking in a great Citizen interview here.
Clearly, while TW has made a statement and says he will discuss matters directly with the fans, there are many angles to the situation the paying customers will NEVER know, no matter how much we try to guess.
