Glaws win a game they might have lost last year

Freddie B - try

Coach Bryan Redpath summed up the change in Gloucester’s form over the last few weeks in just a few words after the 17-5 LV Cup win over Worcester at Kingsholm. “Three months ago we would have lost a game like this, so not to play well and win is satisfying."

He summed up the game perfectly, and also sharply illustrated the way the team’s fortunes and form have improved since those dark days in the first half of the season.
The big question is: why?
Why did they play so badly and lose games like Saturday’s when the players knew, Redpath knew and the fans knew that they were quite capable of winning them?Uncertainty and the unexpected are two of the major ingredients that make watching sport so attractive, and Glaws have dished out their share of both in good measure this season.
To his credit, while happy with the result Redpath was not pleased with the missed chances to add to the score. He told the BBC: "Despite the win the players are disappointed with their performance.
"In the first half I was delighted with our performance against a strong Worcester side, but in the second half we just didn't finish.
"We had a number of chances in the second half and we have got to take two or three more chances if we are going to continue to win and beat the better sides.”
Freddie Burns crossed in the first half, Nicky Robinson adding a conversion and a penalty, while in the second Akapusi Qera got his customary try, again converted, before Wuss’s Chris Pennell grabbed a late consolation.
Glaws play their final LV pool game at Quins next weekend, and while the result might be irrelevant as far as this competition is concerned, it’s a big deal in other ways as Quins visit Kingsholm a week later in the resumed Guinness Premiership.
That’s followed, on February 20, with a trip to Leicester, while the month ends with a Kingsholm game against Sale Sharks – a run of three games that should really give us an illustration of how much improvement there has been in the Glaws squad in the last few weeks.

I will whisper it very quietly but I am starting to actually feel optimistic! There is a long way to go but credit to the players and staff for seemingly getting the gameplan sorted. There was one stark difference for me between Wuss and Glaws and that is you could see Glaws are heading in the right direction. Yes it is not functioning properly yet, there were a couple of butchered try opportunities, but you can see the idea and how Glaws want to play starting to take shape. Credit to all associated, for a year or so a lot of fans have been moaning about lack of quick ball for the 3/4s and now the message seems to be getting home. Glaws have attacking talent that can match anyone in the G.P so give the players a chance to prove it.
