Cup semi gives Glaws chance of rare win over Blues

Delve - Wales cap
By Cherry Picker
March 10 2010
Gloucester go to Wales on Sunday minus four Scots but hopefully with their two England squad members available – but the really bad news is that captain Gareth Delve will be missing from the LV Cup semi-final against Cardiff Blues because of international duty.

Delve’s future is clouded in uncertainty as a mixture of rumours based on little evidence and reports based on even less have him heading for Cardiff, Melbourne and one or two other places when his Kingsholm contract expires at the end of the season.
The bad news is that there don’t appear to be too many people linking him with the prospect of extending his stay with Glaws, even though it appears the club has made him an offer to do so.
Meanwhile, in a move shrouded in accusations of political selection decision, Delve plays for Wales against Ireland in Dublin this weekend – we prefer to believe that he has been picked on merit and nothing else.
Scots Scott and Rory Lawson are both on the bench for their country against England in Edinburgh, while compatriots Alasdair Dickinson and Alasdair Strokosch were both injured while playing for Glaws against wasps last weekend.

But England duo Olly Morgan and Mike Tindall, looking to be coming back to his best as he scored the Glaws try at Wasps last weekend, are expected to be available, though they could be going to Edinburgh as reserves. Peter Buxton is also expected to be fit.
Glaws coach Bryan Redpath described the performance in the wasps defeat as average, but that was being kind – it was pretty poor actually, and that includes the pre-match performance of Redpath himself in deciding to experiment at half-back by picking Tim Taylor and Any Williams ahead of Rory Lawson and Nicky Robinson.

The LV is Gloucester’s only realistic chance of winning anything this season, but Cardiff won’t roll over on their own patch even though they will be without their international contingent while prop Gary Powell is also out with an ankle injury he picked up in last weekend’s defeat against Leinster.
That means they are down to their last two props in a threadbare squad and it could just be the best chance Glaws will get for a long time to earn a rare win over the Blues.

The winners will go into the final against Northampton or Saracens the following weekend, which means the rearranged Guinness Premiership match away to Newcastle Falcons, due to be played on Sunday March 21, will have to be moved to Wednesday March 31 in the far North East – not an easy game for travelling fans to get to in midweek.

Re: Cup semi gives Glaws chance of rare win over Blues
Just wanted to congratulate you on your win today - I thought it well deserved to be honest.

In fact, apart from the result, I actually quite enjoyed the game. It was what all rugby games should be - plenty of commitment and passion shown.

There was a mixture of forward play when the situation called for it, and both teams keen to shift the ball when something was on to give the backs something to work with. The tries were excellent too, although I would take Sweeney to task for that Kamikaze pass which brought your first try just on half time. What a time to have a brainfart.

Nicky had a typical 'Nicky' game - equal measure of excellent game control and poor decision making/kicking.

It's just a real shame that this competition has been relegated to a 'development' tournament. Both sides were missing first choice players due to the intended clashing with the international weekend ( no Ritchie Rees, Jamie Roberts,Shanklin, Martyn Williams, Bradley Davies,Deiniol Jones,Halfpenny etc). This competition could be so much more meaningful if the powers that be wanted it so.

Anyway, well done on the result - no complaints from this side of the Severn bridge.

Cheers for that, considering the players missing on both sides it was a credit to both teams to put such an entertaining game on. It was a crucial win for Glaws because it is possibly their most realistic chance of HEC qualification for next season.

England weren't that good, Sheds. Fear is they may come asking for Sinbad!

It will take more than Sinbad, Tinds, Les and any others you care to name to put that lot right - negative, lacking ideas and at times a disorganised rabble.
Heads must roll.
