Glaws lose way in easy victory

James - 1st try

Easy victories don't happen often in top-level club rugby, especially when the opponents are from France. But Gloucester really did make it look easy as they powered to a 25-13 Amlin Cup win over Bordeaux-Begles at Kingsholm.

The game was won before half-time, by which time Glaws had scored four tries and Billy Twelvetrees had added a conversion and a penalty, as well as being able to afford the luxury of four misses.

But the performance level dropped off in the second half and coach Nigel Davies wasn’t happy.

With All Black scrum-half Jimmy Cowan making an impressive debut, it really was a night of positives for Glaws … in the first half.

Charlie Sharples scored two of the tries, the others coming from Will James and Twelvetrees, while Bordeaux got a late consolation converted try to add to two first-half

penalties.

But after the break, it wasn’t a case of easing up, but one of losing their way for Glaws.

“I was very disappointed,” Davies told the BBC.

"In the first half we showed what we were about and what we can achieve, but we dropped off it. I am disappointed and so are the players.

"We are nowhere near where we need to be yet and there's room for improvement.

"But there's been eight games and we've only lost one, so it's a good return."

Next up to test that good return are Leicester as Premiership rugby returns at Kingsholm … needless to say, that definitely will not be easy.
