Glaws power way to impressive win

Morgan - hat trick

Coach Nigel Davies was looking for proof of the strength in depth of his Gloucester squad, and he got it as Glaws powered to a 46-20 LV= Cup win over London Welsh at Kingsholm.

Davis picked a side featuring the return of several regulars, and they scored six tries in a display of power and pace that left London Welsh floundering in their wake.

They had a bonus point with just over half an hour gone, and could afford the luxury of making replacements by half-time.

Ben Morgan led the charge with a hat trick of tries, with Akapusi Qera, Shane Monahan and Koree Britton weighing in, Freddie Burns slotting four conversions and two penalties and Rob Cook adding a conversion himself.

James Tideswell and Nick Scott got tries for LW during a second half when Glaws were not as dominant as they had been earlier.

Morgan was keen to offload some of his personal glory onto the team and told the club website: “I was just lucky to be on the end of some good work by the rest of the team. But it’s always nice to get one, let alone three.

“We showed that when we start holding the ball and going through phases we can be really dangerous.

“Second half we threw it about a bit and they came back at us, but we ground out the result.

“It was good to blow a few cobwebs off after a bit of a break for some of us. It was good to see guys coming off the bench and those who haven’t had much game time clicking into the role.

“That’s what we need – a squad that, no matter who is playing, can keep on going forward.”

He and the rest of the squad will be hoping that happens next weekend when Premiership rugby returns with a visit from Sale Sharks (formerly of Stockport, now of Salford) at Kingsholm.
