Glaws players to blame, not the coach

Coach Nigel Davies gallantly offered to take full responsibility for Gloucester's shock home defeat at the hands of struggling London Irish, but there is no way he should carry the can - the major fault lies with his players.,

Coaches get praise when a team is winning and blame when they are losing, but once the players step over the white line onto the pitch, it’s up to them to put the pre-march planning into operation.

And in this game they blatantly failed to do so, two first-half tries from George Skivington setting Irish up for a shock victory that demonstrates that Glaws are perhaps not as good a team as some people were starting to believe they are.

Having beaten Irish three times already this season, perhaps too many people took another success for granted, but that is always a mistake in sport and Irish deserve all the credit for their 18-12 victory.

Mistakes, lack of co-ordination and lack of ideas all played a part in the result, but the simple fact is that in front of their own fans, Glaws have got 2013 off to a bad start.

Four penalties from Freddie Burns earned the Glaws points, and Davies told the club website: “That was our worst performance of the season. Our game was full of errors and we weren’t accurate enough or precise enough.

“Disappointingly, we just didn’t turn up in the first half and I take full responsibility for that. But it shows we are not where we want to be yet and we need to do a lot more yet to get to a level where we want to be. It probably shows that we still need some major rebuilding.

“We need to build up momentum, again, but we are still in things and we just have to ride this one and get our heads back on for next weekend.”

Perhaps it’s not a bad things that Glaws face four weeks of cup rugby now, two in Europe home and away and the same in the LV= Cup. They need to put their game back together quickly to ensure this defeat doesn’t turn into a serious setback
