Glaws produce brilliant response to Bath flop

My- 2 tries

Now THAT is what is called a response. Losers at Northampton a fortnight earlier and hammered at home by Bath last week, Gloucester responded in magnificen fashion for a 27-11 Premierhip win at Franklin's Gardens that keeps them in touch with the top four.

Had they followed up those defeats with a similar performance and result, there’s little doubt their season would be in shreds, but now it is alive and well after as good a win as they have had for a long time.

Jonny May scored two tries and the team as a whole defended like demons as the Saints tried to find a way to win. It was a reward for the squad’s determination not to aloow the Bath result to get them down.

Davies told the Citizen: “We played them two weeks earlier, and after that I was quite clear about what we had to do to win this game. We just spoke about that, and then we delivered it today.

“It was a good position, being absolutely clear about what we needed – but the boys delivered it too. In each of the last two games we had given away 18 penalties, and if we’d done that here we would have lost.

“So discipline was key. But having players like Jonny May back makes a difference as well.

“He’s the type of player that can change a game in a tight arm-wrestle, and that’s what he did.

“We’ve refocused on a few areas, tightened up on a few things, and we were intent on making sure that paid off here in the league.”

The home team were limited to a Phil Dowson try and two pens from Stephen Myler, while Glaws had five penalties and a conversion from Rob Cook to show the kicking strength in depth there is at the club, while May’s pair were match-winners.

In the first half he struck with a brilliant individual effort, then broke away to score his second from his own half after half-time.

Jim Mallinder said after the game that his Saints team lacked confidence, but after this that should not be the case for Glaws – and they’ll need all they can get at fourth-top Wasps next Sunday.
