ITV reveals plans for RWC coverage

ITV Rugby website
By TV Times July 26 2007
ITV is promising a feast of international rugby in its coverage of the 2007 World Cup in France, with every one of the 48 games covered LIVE on one of its channels. With exclusive rights to the competition in the UK, ITV says that all the games will also be available live online. The broadcaster is even launching a dedicated website.

ITV says it will also offer tailored three-minute highlights packages, exclusive analysis and behind-the-scenes access to the ITV team, and the best of the ITV Rugby archive - all available free to watch online.
The WEBSITE is running now with full details of the coverage.
The broadcaster adds: "Each of the 48 matches will be broadcast live on ITV1, ITV3 or ITV4 and -  for the first time - each match will be simulcast on itv.com, enabling viewers to catch the live action in the office or at home."
There will be a video blog and a guide and tips from England 2003 World Cup winner, Will Greenwood.
ITV also plans exclusive behind the scenes footage, while ITV Mobile will support the tournament with a dedicated mobile portal containing breaking news updates as well as games, World Cup anthem ringtones and wallpapers.
ITV Interactive will provide "red button" access for news, fixtures lists, results, team and player profiles and match analysis. Features for ITV's coverage include an audio feed directly from the referee's microphone.

Here's the link to ITV's rugby world cup website. You have to say the list of pundits is a bit of a who's who of international rugby.

ITV's World Cup Website

The live streaming of games on ITV.com will be useful for those stuck at work or travelling.

Watch on a normal size telly then, no need for HD unless your telly is the size of an ocean going ship.

Looks like ITV are giving this a lot of effort, looking forward to enjoyable viewing.

Saint Kenneth, would it be possible for you to bring a couple of errors to the attention of someone who can correct them on the ITV 20 facts web page,

I refer to number 4 Grant Fox is a Kiwi not Aussie and for 19 do they mean Sean Fitzpatrick of New Zealand? as I can't find a Shaun Fitzpatrick from Australia

Well spotted Daimon. Those mistakes have been duly pointed out to the ITV sport department so hopefully they will be rectified by at least the end of the tournament!!! lol.

The problem with High Def Phil is that it is only available via SKY, as OFCOM won't release the frequency space for the main broadcasters to transmit such signals terrestrially.

This will all end next year when the BBC and ITV hopefully launch their own satellite service called FreeSat..... oh yes, unlike Sky, apart from the cost of the box, the rest is 100% free.

You pay for the beeb and get no adverts, you get ITV free and have to put up with adverts but somehow SKY manage to get people to Pay and have to put up with adverts as well !!!

The last I heard was that Sky had shifted less than 5000 High Def boxes and subscriptions since they launched the service. The up-take has been pathetic.

Saint.Kenneth

That may be the case, although I would be surprised if the 5000 figure is correct. However, once you have watched sport on HD with a large screen (I have Sky HD and a 43" plasma) it is difficult to go back to standard definition.

Luckily I will be in France for much of the World Cupo so I will see it live.

Ive got Sky HD and its true that sport is lots better. problem is that Ive had it for a year and there are still only 12 channels = fully expected it to grown quicker than that.
Beeb stuff like Mountain on Hd and Planet Earth etc are great,. Cricket is absolutely brilliant on HD.
Cannot believe I am one of only 5,000. Must be at least 50,000?

Technology is around for HD and it is wonderful on Plasma screens - ITV still in the dark ages - missed opportunity

For us the plans are very bad news

We can't get ITV4 on Freeview here - ITV reception on all channels is rubbish on Freeview. And we can't get the ITV broadband video to work, presumably because we have Windows Me.

So what do we find - Wales v Canada on ITV4, half the Scots and Irish games on 4 while SA v Samoa on ITV1.

How can we get it changed? Whats the email address of the top man in ITV ?

Thanks. I tried the Contact Us link and got a message back from 'Duty Officer' saying it was on ITV in the HTV region (aka Wales and West). As we're in Meridien that is not much use to us.

It seems that the Wales Canada game clashes with the latest high speed procession known as a Grand Prix.

Fortunately the local rugby club is now promising to be open and showing every game.

Yes, they are on the ITV website but you need to have a fast broadband connection and at least Windows XP for it to work properly.

I thought i was the only one unhappy with the coverage, it's ok if you happen to live in an area that can pick up digital signals, sadly i can't and on good days my ariel will allow access to 4 terrestrial channels, can't even get channel 5! As for internet coverage, that's not always an option, and i would much prefer watching a TV screen than my computer one! I live in England and support Scotland, due to being Scottish, and think it's a little unfair that only one of the Scotland matches will be shown on ITV1, same for Welsh fans. Grrrr...i shall be making my views known to ITV< thanks westand for the links!

Why do you think sky have jumped onto the HD bandwagon so quickly? Because their sky box sales had peeked and they needed another gimmick to persuade viewers to part with their money.

The problem with the broadcasters is that for example, The London studios, ITV's main studio complex, has 6 studios. The estimated costs for changing a studio from Digital Standard def to HD is around £10 million per studio. So why stump up that amount of money so that you can broadcast only on SKY's platform that is currently going to so few homes.

By the way, the 5,000 figure was one quoted at a recent broadcast convention by a senior BBC engineer during his presentation.

HD technology at the consummers end has been around for a few years now, but the broadcasters equipment is still very much at the 1st generation stage. Currently the European Broadcasting Union has yet to actually formally standardise exactly what High Def technical standards should be.

So why should broadcaster spend £10 million per studio to upgrade to a format where not many people in the country can watch, with equipment that is far from tested and to a standard where you could end up with the mess of different formats similar to that or recordable dvd, +R -R, RW etc.

As to the complaints about games being shown on ITV4 instead of 1, I doubt the Beeb would put all the games on BBC1 either. I take it that if you can't get ITV4 you obviously don't have a sky box, so you should be extremely grateful that Sky didn't win the contract as you would see no games whatsoever.

Did ITV's plans include missing the kick off of the England match?!

Well, if it's good enough for Leeds, it's good enough for the USA!

Its a shame they didn't miss the entire match!!

Nothing to do with ITV when the officials start the game at the wrong allotted time.

What, can you tell me was Will Greenwood on on Sunday evening. Why have him as a commentator when he spoke incesently about a game that had already been played, the Engald win over France. I loved every minute of that game but I also wanted to see the S. Africian game and he spiled it for me with his blithering on. UI would suggest that next Saturday he is kept away from any microphone and the job is given to a professional and not a fool.

ITV4 is available on terrestrial digital TVs and boxes. The trouble is some areas can not receive this, so it would be a Sky box or nothing.
