Portugal make history with first RWC appearance
By Sasha Distel August 15 2007
Portugal have named the 30 players who will make rugby history for the country by playing in their first ever World Cup in France. Portugal beat Uruguay by a single aggregate point in the repechage (isn’t that for rowing in the Olympics?) to become the 20th and last qualifiers for the competition.
They’ll find life in Pool C a little more difficult, against favourites New Zealand, Scotland, Italy and Romania, and they’ll do well to avoid defeat in all their games.
Coach Tomaz Morais is being realistic, though, when he says:
“We have to enjoy each day because this is a lifetime experience. It’s a dream come true.
“For us, we already are the champion team because our World Cup was to get there. We will try to surprise every opponent during every minute of the game.”
Portugal’s squad is: Forwards: Rui Cordeiro, Juan Muré, André Lourenço, Duarte Figueiredo, João Correia, Joaquim Ferreira, Ruben Spachuk, Gonçalo Uva, David Penalva, Marcelo Dias, Diogo Coutinho,Tiago Girão, Juan Somoza, Vasco Uva, João Uva, Paulo Murinello.
Backs: Luis Pissarra, José Pinto, Pedro Cabral, Gonçalo Malheiro, Duarte Pinto, Diogo Mateus, Diogo Gama, Frederico Sousa, Miguel Morais, Pedro Carvalho, António Aguilar, David Mateus, Gonçalo Foro, Pedro Leal.
