By Sasha Distel August 16 2007 Namibia are regarded as one of the outsiders for success in the Rugby World Cup, and their 105-13 defeat at the hands of neighbours South Africa a month before the tournament starts won’t have done their prospects any good. But they hold high hopes for a good tournament. It was the first official test between the two countries, and Namibia will be hoping there isn’t another for a long time.
However, the prospect of facing France, Ireland and Argentina as well as Georgia in Pool D will tend to turn their knees to jelly for the next few weeks. Namibia sacked their coach Johan Venter just three months before the start date, so his assistant Hakkies Husselman has hardly had a lot of time to impose his will on the squad. Several of his team’s top players have been playing in the Currie Cup for their South African clubs, and that hasn’t helped the preparations. Husselman played for Namibia in the 2003 World Cup, involving games against both Ireland and Argentina. He even scored a try against the Pumas. He says: We are looking forward to the World Cup and you know it is always nice to be the underdog and to show them this is what we are made off and it is always nice to have a low profile. “We will be seeing what happens, but we are looking forward to each and every game and we definitely won’t be a walkover in any of those. The players are very committed, they are working very hard and we are just looking forward to the games.”Forwards: Skipper Badenhorst, Jacques Burger, Bradley Langenhoven, Thinus du Plessis, Jane du Toit, Nico Esterhuizen, Hugo Horn, Domingo Kamonga, Wacca Kazombiaze, Kees Lensing (capt.), Herman Lintvelt, Michael Mackenzie, JM Meyer, Jacques Niewenhuis, Johnny Redelinghuys, Heino Senekal, Piet van Zyl Marius Visser. Backs: Melrick Africa, Heini Bock, Lu-Wayne Botes, John Drotsky, Du Preez Grobler, Eugene Jantjes, Tertius Losper, Deon Mouton, Morne Schreuder, Jurie van Tonder, Emile Wessels, Ryan Witbooi.
