Rugby Fiji
Starting first with Fiji, the Pacific Islanders are missing top named stars, wing Rupeni Caucaunibuca and back-rower Alifereti Doviverata, while Serali Bobo is also not selected.
Doviverata, who was captain for the 2003 Rugby World Cup, has slipped down the rankings, with Sisa Koyamaibole, Aca Ratuva and Akapusi Qera all selected ahead for the back row slots.
Controversial Caucaunibuca has been dropped after a series of mishaps and bust-ups following his stunning 2003 campaign. In 2005, he was banned by the Fijian rugby board after failing to appear for a World Cup Qualifier, then more recently tested positive for Marijuana. Though his sentence will be complete by the 7th September kick off, he's not match fit, and seen by many as a liability.
However, Wales, Japan, Canada and Australia will all be happy of his exclusion; the French based winger is seen by many as capable of turning any defence inside out.
Fiji have themselves stated that they are confident of beating Wales in their 29th September fixture, their forward coach, Australian Greg Mumm, told BBC;
"Our forwards will be more competitive. We can defeat Wales as we have got the size up front and our forwards have got a good height advantage, the only thing we need to work on is the set pieces. If Fiji can dominate possession, I'm confident that we can upset Wales and we can also match the Wallabies."
There are many familiar names in the squad however, with European based players such as Netani Talei of Worcester, Akapusi of Gloucester, Clermont Auvergne's Seremaia Bai and Vilimone Delasau, Saracens trio Mosese Rauluni, Kameli Ratuvou and Nicky Little as well as versatile back Seru Rabeni of Leicester proving the team are not be underestimated.
Their squad looks like this;
Jone Qovu (back-row), Isoa Domolailai (lock), Bill Gadolo (hooker), Jone Railomo (prop), Netani Talei (back-row), Alefoso Yalayalatabua (prop), Semisi Naevo (lock), Sisa Koyamaibole (back-row), Aca Ratuva (back-row), Akapusi Qera (back-row), Graham Dewes (prop), Kele Leawere (lock), Wame Lewaravu (back-row), Sunia Koto (prop/hooker), Henry Qiodravu (prop), Ifereimi Rawaqa (lock), Vereniki Sauturaga (hooker), Seru Rabeni (centre/wing), Seremaia Bai (centre), Norman Ligairi (full-back), Gabiriele Lovobalavu (centre), Waisea Luveniyali (fly-half), Jone Daunivucu (half-back), Nicky Little (fly-half), Mosese Rauluni (scrum-half), Vilimone Delasau (wing), Isoa Neivua (wing), Maleli Kunavore (utility back), Filimone Bolavucu (wing), Kameli Ratuvou (wing).
As for Canada, Welsh fans will be very familiar with the squad already! Rod Snow (ex-Newport), John Thiel (ex-Bridgend), John Tait (ex-Cardiff, ex-Llanelli and ex-Ospreys) and Ed Fairhurst (ex-Cardiff Blues) are included, with former Cardiff assistant Geraint John, part of the coaching staff.
The familiarity doesn't stop there however, with Morgan Williams and Jamie Cudamore also having links to the Dragons, who are coincidently their first fixture of France 07, facing the Welsh on the 9th September.
Canada also turn to lock Mike James of Stade Francias. The 34 year old surprisingly not the oldest member of the squad, Snow scooping that award at 37!
Snow has an amazing record for the Canucs, having played in every single match of their last 3 campaigns. He was unexpected to make the squad, after missing out of the original 32-man draft. Snow and Thiel both started in Canada's warm up win over Portugal, the Canadians winning that one 42-12.
Coach Ric Sugitt said after the win;
"Today we met a bit of adversity against a scrappy side. Bumps happen along the way and as coaches we have to expect these kinds of things. We're not going into panic mode because of this result. I'm happy the guys won but we're not satisfied with this result and we know we still have work to do. We have to iron out some rough spots but we'll be ready by September 9th when we play Wales, and for the other three World Cup games. Credit to Portugal who played a very good game today, I wish them well in the World Cup, they deserve to be there."
Their squad is a follows;
David Biddle (back-row), Mike Burak (lock), Aaron Carpenter (hooker), Jamie Cudmore (lock), Craig Culpan (centre), Derek Daypuck (fly-half), Ed Fairhurst (scrum-half), Scott Franklin (prop), Mike James (lock), Adam Kleeberger (back-row), Justin Mensah-Coker (wing), Ander Monro (fly-half), Dan Pletch (prop), Mike Pletch (prop), James Pritchard (wing), Mike Pyke (full-back), Pat Riordan (hooker), Ryan Smith (fly-half), Rod Snow (prop), David Spicer (centre), Sean-Michael Stephen (back-row), Luke Tait (lock), Jon Thiel (prop), Kevin Tkachuk (prop), Nick Trenkel (centre), DTH Van der Merwe (full-back), Mike Webb (back-row), Matt Weingart (scrum-half), Morgan Williams (scrum-half, Capt), Colin Yukes (back-row)
