Good news for Scots: Callam is fit

David Callam - fit
By Sasha Distel August 30 2007
There’s good news for Scotland with the World Cup just over a week away, No.8 David Callam passed fit to keep his place in the 30-man squad. The Edinburgh player suffered an injury just above his right eye in the warm-up game against South Africa at Murrayfield. But there's not such good news for some other teams.

Specialists have confirmed there is no serious damage and Callam has been given the all-clear to train. He’s expected to be fully fit next week.

But it’s not such good  news for some of the other teams heading for France, with Japan particularly badly hit.

World record try-scorer Daisuke Ohata has already been ruled out with an Achilles tendon injury, his place going to Tomoki Kitagawa, one of three late changes forced on coach John Kirwan.

Fly-half Eijo Ando damaged knee ligaments in this week’s 15-13 win over Portugal in Venice, Tatsuya Kusumi taking his place. Hooker Mitsugu Yamamoto had already been rplaced by Inokuchi Tako because of a hamstring injury.

One of Kirwan’s team-mates in the All Blacks team that won the World Cup in 1987 was Michael Jones, and he’s been forced into a late change in his Samoan squad.

Prop Donald Kerslake misses out through injury,  Alfie Vaeluaga taking his place.

Argentina centre Martin Gaitan was taken ill after his team’s 27-20 defeat at the hands of Wales in Cardiff on August 18, and later had surgery for a blocked artery. Hernan Senillosa takes his place.

For Italy, Carlo del Fava replaces Fabio Staibano and French prop Nicholas Mas replaces Sylvain Marconnet, who has not recovered from a broken leg.
