(Pool A) Match Review

South Africa 59  vs. Samoa  7

South Africa got off to a brilliant start in their first game of the Rugby World Cup putting eight tries over the Samoans and gaining a bonus point to boot.

Samoa put up a brave fight especially in the first half and had the Boks in their sights going in at half time only 21 -7 down.  However, the strength and stamina of the Springboks showed through and the second half they pulled away making it look all very easy.

Four tries came from Bryan Habana (remember the chappie we tipped in our Preview) and in so doing he equalled Chester William's Rugby World Cup record set against the Samoans in 1995.

And then we have that man Monty who bagged 29 points, with two tries, five conversions and three penalties in a good all round performance.  Tries also from outside centre Jaque Fourie and right wing JP Pietersen right on the whistle ensured the Springbok bonus point victory.

Percy Montgomery, South Africa

Samoa's try came from centre Gavin Williams and his conversion.  Centre Brian Lima then came on for Samoa, becoming the first player to take part in five World Cups. Brian Lima

However, he was only on for a moment as he was forced to leave the field following a head clash while attempting a tackle.

All in all a good day at the office for the Springbok.............

Look out England the Boks are coming to get you!

No metion of Honiss playing on after the 40mins in the first gifting the boks a try or the stealing of one from Samoa for "offside" which I have never seen given in that situation before ever, or the scrum from which South Africa scored there first second half try which was award to South Africa despite Samoa winning there own lineout and having the ball at the back of there own ruck.

Who wrote this report Jake White?

These diabolical decisions broke the samoan moral and although South Africa stepped up the skills samoa stepped them down after honiss cheating them I'm think its a hollow victory.

SK88,

well pointed out

Honiss had one of his frequent one-eyed, pedantic horrors. There are in NZ at least half a dozen better refs than him.

I have never fancied trying to referee a game. I always try not to criticize them, but some do seem to make basic errors of judgment. Perhaps it is just like the players at times and the occasion gets to them. Perhaps there is too much riding on it all now.

In terms of the report, I am not quite sure that I would call it a brilliant start. OK, but not brilliant. I think had Jake White written it, it would have been a little more illuminating, even if it were biased.

If you know the history of Bok Samoa clashes, you will understand that it is always hard with no prisoners taken. I am surprised Brian Lima was not cited for his deliberate head high no arms tackle on Andre Pretorius. Fortunately he was in cloud cuckoo land after the tackle, it looked like he forgot it was Sunday and he was playing rugby.

Honiss was not good but that idiot who refed the Argentina France game took the first prize for being an incompetent.
