Hosts 12/1 As Rivals Impress
By Betting Zone September 10 2007
It's advantage the southern hemisphere after the opening weekend of the World Cup in France. New Zealand, Australia and South Africa all opened their campaigns with impressive wins while the performances of the Six Nations challengers ranged from adequate to downright shoddy.

France were the big drifters at the front of the market after their 17-12 defeat to Argentina in the opening game of the tournament on Friday night.

That loss coupled with some impressive performances by their main rivals means the French can now be backed at 12s with Bet365 and Sporting Bet while Argentina have been cut to as short as 25s.

New Zealand are a general 1/2 after blasting Italy 76-14 while South Africa have hardened as second favourites at around the 9/2 mark after cruising past Samoa 59-7.

Australia have leapfrogged the hosts and are now a general 9/1 after a thumping 91-3 over an admittedly weakened Japan.

England laboured to a 28-10 win over the USA on Saturday and are 33s in most books ahead of Friday's clash with South Africa.

"If they play like that against South Africa it will be a bloodbath," said Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison, whose firm make the Springboks 11pt favourites on the handicap for the clash in Saint-Denis.

Ireland, Wales and Scotland all got off to winning starts on Sunday but none managed to cover the handicap.

Wales trailed Canada 17-9 before winning 42-17 while Ireland's World Cup got off to an ignominious start as the men in green laboured to a 32-17 win over Namibia.

Scotland looked patchy in a 56-10 win over Portugal.

Ireland have been shunted out to 33s by Stan James while Wales and Scotland are 150/1 and 300/1 respectively at Sporting Bet.

There are no matches today.
