IRB Rugby World Cup 2007 - Pool A Match Preview

14 September 2007 - 21:00, Stade de France, Saint Denis

England vs. South Africa

THE BIG ONE

This is going to be 'le crunch' match of this Pool for the defending Rugby World Champions England.  After a lack lustre performance against the USA, England need to up their game ten fold it the want to compete in the arena with South Africa.

England have not made life easy for themselves Captain Vickery's  trip on Eagles centre Paul Emerick, Saturday gains him a two mach ban.   Wisely the England camp have decided not to appeal the decision saying:

The England RWC squad has announced that, further careful consideration and in all the relevant circumstances, it has taken the decision not to proceed to appeal the two match suspension for England Captain Phil Vickery.

Injuries and illness are also hitting the camp also. England are still without Jonny Wilkinson (ankle injury) sustained during training prior to the start of the Rugby World Cup and now Olly Barkley, after a scan  has sustained a strain to his left hip abductor.  Olly's place in the starting line up will be taken by Andy Farrell  and the team will be captained by Martin Corry

Head Coach Brian Ashton has dropped Dallaglio, Worsley and Cueto moved Robinson to full back, brought in Sackey, Easter, Sheridan  and Stevens replaces Vickery.

All players have to step up for this match otherwise they will be saying    'Au Revoir' to the  Rugby World Cup,

as I cannot see them getting out of the pool if they lose to the Springboks.

South Africa on the other hand are looking very strong and confident going into this match.  Full-back Percy Montgomery will earn his 89th cap if he plays at the Stade de France, to join scrum-half Joost van der Westhuizen as the most capped Springbok.  They also have had  flanker Schalk Burger suspended for four matches, including this game against the defending champions England, after being found guilty of a dangerous high tackle and is replaced in the 22-man squad by Bobby Skinstad.

I have a feeling the only crunch will be the deflation of wishful thinking, most of it being hope against good sense.

That's what we need in a crisis: a leader who's decisive ... I think.

That's not fair Two Sheds, My Cat may very well have once been indecisive, but now he is just not sure.

There is far too much talk about good ball and bad ball.
In my opinion, good ball is when you have possession and bad ball is when the opposition have it.
