Ireland need to win last two Pool games - skipper

Two worried Irishmen
By Sasha Distel

Before the 2007 Rugby World Cup started, Ireland were given the best chance of any of the home nations of doing well in the competition. But now it seems they’ve been dragged down to the general level of other Northern Hemisphere hopefuls and have no chance of even threatening to do well in the competition after their drab 14-10 win over Georgia.

The players and coach Eddie O’Sullivan are trying to put some positive spin on the performance, but there’s no hiding from the truth – they were almost as bad as England.

O’Sullivan said his team played better than in the win over Namibia, and put the blame for the close scoreline on the fact that Georgia played above themselves. In fact, Georgia – where there are only seven rugby pitches and about 300 registered players – were actually 10-7 in the lead for a while.

Like Six Nations rivals England, Ireland showed a distinct lack of ideas on how to break down stubborn but inferior opposition, poor discipline and equally bad levels of tactical know-how.

In short, they were bad.

Skipper Brian O’Driscoll was realistic enough to admit his team probably needs to win the last two games to qualify for the knock-out stages, and as they are against hosts France and Argentina, it’s clear the Irish need to improve.

Hey, maybe the woefully inadequate Six Nations sides could put together a United Nations team for RWC 2011?

At least then you may look competitive?

You still won't win anything, but you will look good on paper.
