Tongan Paddy Power From Zero to Hero
By Paddy Power September 17 2007
Paddy Power, the Tongan centre who changed his name by deed poll from Epeli Taione, inspired his team to a famous victory over arch rivals Samoa in World Cup pool A on Sunday. Tonga were a massive 20 points underdogs for the game and Paddy Power looked to have cost his team dear when sent to the sin bin just before half time.

However, he made amends by scoring the match winning try early in the second half.

He was 40/1 with Paddy Power, the bookie that shares his name, to score and be yellow carded in the game.

Tonga were down to just 13 men when the final whistle came but just managed to hold out for victory.

Tonga have now joined South Africa as the only unbeaten sides in Pool A. The top two in the table face each other in Lens on Sept 22nd.

Many predicted that Samoa could upset England following their hammering by the Springboks, but it now looks likely that Brian Ashton's men have more to fear from Paddy Power and his hard hitting Tongan team mates.

Paddy Power have slashed the odds of Tonga beating England from 16/1 to 10/1 and have also cut Tongan Paddy's odds of scoring a try against England from 8/1 to 7/1.

Punters who have already backed Paddy Power to receive a yellow card against England will be rubbing their hands after today's escapade as his odds had previously tumbled from 20/1 to 10/1 and have now shortened even further to 8/1.

Paddy Power said, "The old luck of the Irish certainly rubbed off on Tonga today! It was an awesome Power packed performance. Tongan Paddy had a stormer - England had better watch out!"

Paddy Power Bet:

10/1 Tonga to beat England 7/1 Paddy Power to score a try against England
8/1 Paddy Power to be sin-binned against England
33/1 Paddy Power to score a drop-goal against England
100/1 Paddy Power to be sent off against England

I watched Epi/Paddy Power on many occasions for Falcons and if he's one of Tonga's best then we needn't worry too much - he must hold the record for number of knock ons and his tackling is poor for the size of him.

If having green hair is an advertisement for Paddy Power (???), then surely having a shaven head is an advertisement for Braun. Having a non shaven head is an advertisement for Head and Shoulders. I am amazed by the new levels of idiocy that the IRB can fnd to sink to.

I doubt Tonga could afford it, but wonder if the Irish bookie might seek legal advice, not acknowledging a player by his legal name cannot be right, choosing what coulour hair players must have is even more wrong. Didn't the french team once take to the pitch with dyed blond hair, and again with shaven heads?

There is far too much talk about good ball and bad ball.
In my opinion, good ball is when you have possession and bad ball is when the opposition have it.
