World Cup winner Greenwood is top TV pundit

Will Greenwood
By Sasha Distel
September 23 2007
The team he helped win the World Cup in 2003 may be about to lose the Webb Ellis Trophy, but Will Greenwood is still a winner. The former England centre is easily the best pundit on ITV as their coverage of the tournament wins a number of admirers, many of whom feared before the World Cup that the standards would fall short of those on BBC and Sky.

With Stuart Barnes, on loan from Sky, apparently regarded as the top right-hand man for match commentators, Greenwood's knowledgeable and humorous observations have been a ray of sunshine as the Home Countries have covered themselves in something other than glory.
Greenwoof's touchline updates have been clear and to the point, while his pundity as a co-commentator have turned many a dull or one-sided game into something apporaching entertainment.
He was there for the Australia v Fiji Pool C game, when his comments included:

  • Australia don't play in gold ... it's canary yellow.
  • He thought about the cross-kick there, then he rememkbered he can't kick.
  • He's a cross between Margot Fonteyn and Jonah Lomu.

All in all, Greenwood has had a good tournmant so far, though his brief explanations of some of rugby's basics do tend to address people who have never seen an oval ball before, let alone watched a game.
"Shaggy", as he is known to some of his friends, was always an entertaining player - now he gives just as good value in his second career, though it has to ber admitted that in some cases, he hasn't had a lot to beat to come out on top of this particular pile.

Nah, much prefer Johno,.............Asked, 'Wilkinson had a good game didn't he'?

Response along the lines of .......'we needed to get quick ball, and Andy Gomarsall provided it' no offence to JW lovers but excellent reposte to narrow blinkered media w@@@@rs looking for 'the public will like this' response.

Another carreeer opportunity gone Big Fella, or perhaps not,......... 'know what I mean?

Ah, Shaggy. As classy behind the mike as he was on the pitch.

Greenwood I enjoy watching, so too Fitzy and Lynagh, and Bayfield.

Rosenthal on the other hand... shame he's not the one stuck on ITV4.
