Wales Out of RWC 07!
What was the best game of the Rugby World Cup so far, and will go down as one of the all time great games, the Grand Slam winners of just 2 years ago crashed out of the competition to South Sea Islanders, Fiji.
And in the aftermath of the shock Welsh loss, Gareth Jenkins will today be axed in a 2 o'clock announcement by the WRU.
Of course it's a huge upset for the Welsh to not be there in the last 8, but in truth, they were beaten by what on the day, was a superior outfit. A pathetic first half performance by the Welsh conceded 3 tries and 2 penalties in a crazy 20 minute spell that saw the match turn on its head.
The Welsh did end the half well however, and added to their early Stephen Jones penalty with a try by Alix Popham in the 34th minute, and were then given an extra boost when Leawere was sin binned for kicking out at Stephen Jones. The Welsh then had the chance to add an extra penalty on the stroke of half time which would've brought them within 2 scores, but a terrible miss from the boot of James Hook fluffed the kick to leave the Welsh trailing 25-10 at the break.
The second half was equally as strange and dramatic however, the Welsh came out firing on all cylinders, and within minutes were trying to take advantage of the fourteen men.
Clearly fired up from the half time team talk, quick turn over from Martyn Williams and some neat handling, Shane Williams beat three men using his quick feet to score a sensational solo try from his 22. While the try was good, the swan dive celebration as he crossed was not well received by the viewing Welsh public, who had very little to celebrate with the score line.
But it did kick off a great 10 minutes for the Dragons, who soon after scored a try through the newest man to win 100 International caps, Gareth Thomas. He now retires from international rugby with a remarkable 100 caps and 40 tries, he's the highest cap holder, and try scorer in Welsh history, and what a match in which to go out.
And to complete the turn around and have Welsh fans believing they'd done enough, winger Mark Jones crossed after a great break by Dwaine Peel. Steven Jones converted.
Wales lead 29-25.
Nikcy Little kept his men well and truly in the game however, putting them back into the lead with 2 successful penalties. But Martyn Williams ran a wonderful interception from 65 meters as Wales looked poised to finally edge out their opponents. Crucially, Steven Jones hit the post for the third time in the match! That was at least 9 point lost from the boot with Hooks first half slice, and would've made a world of difference.
But Dewes had other plans. His try crossing according to the video ref, although from where I was sitting, it was always the wrong call.
It means that Wales won't join England and Scotland in the final eight, and are instead face a flight back home likewise Ireland.
It's a massive hammer blow for the home nation, but for Fiji, jubilation as they reach the quarters for the first time since 1987 They go on to face South Africa, while Wales said that building for 2011 begins today. So does the search for a new head coach.

Gareth Jenkins yesterday;
"We came here to make the quarters and we haven't done it - as coach you are accountable, but we mustn't make a knee-jerk reaction. Personally, my ambition is to continue coaching Wales, it's that simple."
Gareth Thomas on bowing out with the loss;
"I'll never retire, but I won't be around in the next World Cup, It's probably better for Wales to start looking at other guys now and building a squad for 2011."
Fiji captain and scrum-half Mosese Rauluni;
"Years ago Fiji would have lost that game, I'm so proud of the boys. They stuck to it, and it comes down to all the hard work and the training we did leading into this World Cup. We made it to the quarter-finals, and it was our goal to do that. I know they're going to start celebrating in Fiji now with a lot of kava and maybe a lot of beer. Good on them, they deserve it."
