South Africa are now the 1/3 favourites with Sky Bet and William Hill for the World Cup following their 37-13 victory over Argentina on Sunday night. South Africa will meet England in the final, just one month after they inflicted England's record World Cup defeat - a 36-0 drubbing in the pool stage.

And now patriotic punters who jumped on the England bandwagon are set to land a million-pound plus payout, say William Hill.

The firm were offering England at 80/1 to retain the World Cup after they were beaten 36-0 by South Africa in the early stages of the tournament, but they are now 9/4 after stunning victories over Australia and France.

"England were written off at 80/1 after losing to South Africa, but now they are on the verge of landing one of the greatest patriotic gambles of all time for the punters who remained loyal who poured four figure bets on them," said William Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.

"They were 7/1 to retain the trophy before facing France and punters just steamed in to back them."
