Swinton win title but brave South Wales claim bonus point

Swinton are champions

The South Wales Scorpions bravely fell to a 40-28 defeat at the Willows, as the Swinton Lions won the Championship One title. Mark Rowley’s men led at half-time and will be pleased with a decent performance against the league champions.

Aled James broke the deadlock for the Scorpions, before Ashley Bateman’s try put the visitors further ahead.

However, the Lions fought back and a quick-fire brace from Dale Cunniffe, both converted, gave the impetus to the hosts.

Alex Hurst bagged the fifth try of the game for Swinton after the Lancashire side had two tries disallowed.

But it was the Scorpions that took a narrow lead into the break as Jamie Murphy showed a great turn of pace before duly slotting over the extras.

The Lions, needing a win to secure the title, started to stamp their authority on proceedings after the break with tries from Ritchie Hawkyard and Lee Wingfield; but the Scorpions soon struck back.

Casey Bromilow surged forward before completing a quick one-two with  Murphy before and under the posts. The extras were converted.

But the hosts’ class eventually shone through. Gavin Dodd and Andrew Gorski scored tries, before the Scorpions snatched the final try of the match as on-form Christiaan Roets latched onto Murphy’s punt to score.
