Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium reached a major milestone during March 2009 as the last roof girder was put in place as the stadium quickly nears completion.  With the last of the stadium's 36 roof girders - each weighing 50-70 tons and spanning 36 meters - now in place, the stadium’s most complex construction element has now been successfully negotiated, as Nelson Mandela Bay looks set to become the first newly-constructed 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium to be completed.

The municipality said the handing over of the stadium will be held at the end of April, thereafter several games events are lined up to test the waters when the stadium gets operational in May.

The British and Irish Lions will play at this new venue twice in June 2009 and what a fabulous venue it looks.  Virtually all the stadium’s 46,000 seats have now been installed and the pitch has already been laid, with the stadium in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province raring to go and ready in good time.
