The British and Irish Lions squad players are to be paid £38,000 each for taking part in the tour and if  they can repeat the 1997 series win over South Africa they will receive an extra £350,000 bonus to be split equally between all of the players on the trip.  So they could bank £1.7million if they win all three Test matches in South Africa 2009.

The package has been agreed  by the organising committee, player's representatives and the four home union squads having input on the final deal.  Ian McGeechan Head Coach will be paid under a separate deal.

McGeechan will be naming his squad on 21 April with the captaincy looking all most certain to be between the Irish pair of  Brian O'Driscoll and Paul O'Connell.

General Selection for head coach McGeechan has been made a bit more difficult now after the events of the Six Nations, a few new contenders have come to the surface Delon Armitage being one and maybe Croft and Flutey also  Jamie Heaslip, Ireland, Ben Foden, Mike Blair Scotland, Alun-Wyn Jones to name a few.

What would be your Lions selection?
