Will O’Connell be the next Lion Heart for the British & Irish Lions Squad this summer, leading out the Test Sides as Captain?
Looks like it according to this weekend's papers however, we won't have long to wait to find out as Ian McGeehan's will be naming his selection on Tuesday 21st April.
O'Connell who plays lock for Munster and Ireland, made his debut for Ireland against Wales in the Six Nations 2002, scoring a try. He featured in both the 2003 and 2007 Rugby World Cups playing in every game. He took over as Captain from Brian O'Driscoll in the 2004 Six Nations when O'Driscoll was injured.

O'Connell the Lion 2005
He has the necessary Lions qualifications and experience, having toured with the 2005 Lions to New Zealand and played in each Test Match. As for Captaincy material, he also fits the bill having captained his country against France Feb., 2004), Scotland, Feb., 2005 and he stepped into the Captain's role again in 2007 to lead Ireland out for the historic first game against France in Croke park when Brian O'Driscoll was injured. He is currently his province's skipper and was a key figure in their Heineken Cup success.
In November 2006 he was among five short listed for the International Rugby Board player of the year and the only northern hemisphere nominee.
The quality and character of the man is ideal for the Lions both as a player and Captain.
