When London Welsh scored after just two minutes the visiting supporters might have been expecting their team to continue where they left off against Pirates the previous week. Dogged defensive efforts by Moseley and the strong wind ensured that this was a tight game and errors by both sides ended a number of scoring opportunities.
Welsh took a five point lead when Rob Lewis picked the ball up at the back of the scrum and, spotting a gap, broke on the blind-side of the scrum and gave a scoring pass to Paul Sampson. Aled Thomas’ kick was blown wide of the posts.
Each team added three points to their scores through penalties and Moseley could have closed the gap when Sampson was penalised for not releasing. The blustery conditions at Billesley Common made goal kicking difficult and the penalty drifted wide.
Tristan Roberts, Moseley’s fly-half, was successful with his next two kicks at goal and with just over half an hour gone he had put his side 9-8 ahead. Moseley’s lead was further extended when Mensah-Coker made a break and found Spee in support to score the try. With the conversion missed Moseley were now leading 14-8. Welsh had a final opportunity to score in the first half but Thomas’ kick into the wind again went wide.
London Welsh opened the second half with a series of phases taking them deep into Moseley’s half. The home team gained possession and found the space to move the ball half the length of the pitch. Welsh defence stopped them gaining further ground but conceded a penalty in doing so. Roberts’ fourth penalty of the afternoon took the score onto 17-8.
During the following minutes Thomas soon had four more chances to kick at goal. The first kick was unsuccessful but added six points with the second and third kicks, The fourth kick would have levelled the scores but instead Welsh still trailed 17-14.
Welsh could have settled the result when Errie Claassens break gave Paul Mackey the chance to score under the posts but the replacement centre couldn’t keep hold of the ball.
Moseley’s defence held firm until Dan George crashed over the line in the closing moments. Gordon Ross spotted a gap in the defence and his pass to the hooker took Welsh back into the lead and Thomas’ added the conversion to give them a hard-fought 21-17 win.
