Ireland's Parisian Triumphs

By Gary Watton

Becomingly increasingly and frustratingly rare, Ireland's victories in Paris are worth noting, as a means of inspiring future expeditions to the big capital on the Seine. Here follows a regrettably brief chronicle of Irish wins in the hallowed surroundings of Paris. Vive la revolution!

2000: France 25 IRELAND 27; 19th March; at Stade de France

A Brian O'Driscoll hat-trick of tries mesmerised les Bleus to record a famous win. Ronan O'Gara converted each try and David Humphreys kicked two penalties.

1972: France 9 IRELAND 14; 29th January; at Colombes

Ray McLoughlin and debutant John Moloney were the try-scoring heroes. The captain Tom Kiernan missed each conversion, but he kicked two penalties.

1952: France 8 IRELAND 11; 26th January; at Colombes

The flanker Jim McCarthy helped himself to two tries on the debut of full back John Notley who converted one of them. France's points were scored by Prat!

1948: France 6 IRELAND 13; 1st January; at Colombes

Ireland cruised to a ten-nil interval lead. Debutant Jim McCarthy grabbed a try, while Barney Mullan and Paddy Reid also recorded tries on New Year's Day.

1928: France 0 IRELAND 6; 31st December; at Colombes

Eugene Davy and the captain George Stephenson were the try-scoring heroes in this fixture which was peculiarly arranged for New Year's Eve!

1927: France 3 IRELAND 8; 1st January; at Colombes

George Stephenson converted the try of Eugene Davy and also kicked a crucial penalty as Ireland made a successful foray into Paris once more.

1925: France 3 IRELAND 9; 1st January; at Colombes

The centres, James Gardiner and George Stephenson scored tries as Ireland came from behind. The captain, William Crawford also kicked a penalty.

1914: France 6 IRELAND 8; 1st January; at Parc des Princes

Joseph Quinn and William Tyrell each grabbed a try, but the score that separated the two teams was the conversion from the captain Dickie Lloyd.

1912: France 6 IRELAND 11; 1st January; at Parc des Princes

The captain Dickie Lloyd recorded a try and a conversion while there were also tries for the two centres, Alexander Foster and Alfred Taylor.

1910: France 3 IRELAND 8; 28th March; at Parc des Princes

Tom Smyth and Charles Thompson obtained the decisive tries in the first-ever Five Nations skirmish between the French and the Irish.
