Wasps 35-15 Falcons
By Leipziger
October 16 2006
Wasps came back from two tries down yesterday at Adams Park to win 35-15 and condemn the Falcons to a fourth defeat in five league matches so far in 2006/07. Jamie Noon and Mathew Tait scored for Newcastle before Wasps hit back for a bonus point.
Wasps were the first team on the scoresheet with a Jeremy Staunton penalty after Eni Gesinde had stolem the ball when the home side had a good overlap, and Anthony Elliott was also forced to clear a chase kick into touch. We took the lead though after 14 minutes when following a turnover Tait was set up and he beat several defenders to score, Toby Flood converting. Tait's England centre colleague Noon went over in the corner following a lineout, and though Flood could not convert, 3-12 after 20 minutes looked good.

The Falcons were hit however when lock Jason Oakes was sin-binned for stamping, and within a few minutes Staunton had kicked another penalty and Dan Leo broke through on the 22 to score Wasps’ first try, which was converted. Tom Voyce added another score just before Oakes returned, and further damage was done when Gesinde and Noon were injured in vainly trying to defend. Geoff Parling and Joe Shaw came on, and Matthew Burke had to make a late tackle to stop Paul Sackey scoring on the Wasps right. The third try did however come before half time, Tom Rees the scorer and Staunton converting to make the score 25-12 at the break.

Gesinde returned temporarily and early in the second half Tim Visser, David Wilson, Andy Long and Brent Wilson were also thrown on. Flood scored a penalty on 50 minutes as we looked to get back into the match, but the Falcons could not find their way through Wasps defence before Sackey scored his second to secure the Pests’ bonus point, and when home prop Peter Bracken was given a yellow card it was too late for us to take advantage.

Burke almost had a chance to score a consolation try when chasing a Flood kick which went just into touch, and then in the dying minutes Voyce set up England back Josh Lewsey to score from close range, and Wasps were the winners 35-15 as the Falcons lost at in High Wycombe for the fifth successive season.

The defeat leaves us still tenth in the Premiership going into another three-week break, three points behind London Irish and already a massive 15 behind table-toppers Bristol, our next league opponents on November 4th at Kingston Park. A week after that however will be a real crunch match against Harlequins, who are on two points along with Worcester behind us.

Hopefully by November we will have the confidence of two good European wins, beginning this Friday with Petrarca Padova at home.
