THAT Decision in Numbers
By Mark H
February 13 2007
In light of the decision taken today that Jonny Wilkinson will be left out of Falcons’ match 22 on Sunday afternoon at Bristol, here’s a look at the numbers that matter in Jonny’s (and the Falcons’) season so far.

248

Number of minutes Jonny has played in a Falcons shirt in 2006/07.

153

Number of minutes Jonny has played in an England shirt this season.

42

Number of points Jonny has scored for England this season

27

Number of points Jonny has scored for Falcons this season

18

Number of Newcastle games Jonny has missed this season through injury

3

Number of games Jonny has completed this season for either Falcons or England

---

16

March, when Falcons travel to Worcester for a crucial Premiership match

10

Falcons’ current Premiership position

8

Number of points Falcons are currently ahead of Worcester

3

Number of Falcons players likely to be on international duty that weekend

2

Number of fly-halves that includes

---

And finally…

1

Number of games Jonny has been stood down from this season

0

Take your pick on this one.  You could have…

Number of players at other clubs in the England starting XV “stood down” by their clubs

Amount of confidence I have in the RFU at the moment

Amount of respect I have for the RFU at the moment

Logic in this decision

Other clubs that would take this decision

Number of English rugby players currently centrally contracted to the RFU (but get ready for that to change)

I’m sure you can think of your own.  I’ve got a certain amount of sympathy for the club on this one, because I think (and not knowing anything more about the decision that what I’ve read online today) they’ve been put in a situation that should not have been allowed to happen.  That said, it does seem to be a hasty announcement, and brings into question, for me, two things:-

(1)   Have the club been assured that relegation will not happen, and therefore it doesn’t matter what side is played on Sunday, or

(2)   Are the “bumps and bruises” we hear of signs of a more serious injury?

One thing’s for sure, if Falcons go down at the end of the season by a narrow margin, blame will be flying everywhere, and supporters’ eyes will come back to this weekend.  There may be a lot of blood on certain people’s hands in the Twickenham corridors of power.
