Brace of tries
By Leipziger
March 25 2007
The Falcons' last away match of the Premiership season ended in disappointment yesterday at Kingsholm as an absorbing battle, which saw two tries from Jamie Noon in the first half, ended in a 24-18 defeat.
For the third time in four away games, our pack put in a sterling performance against strong opponents yet we threw away a lead to lose late on in the game, with Ryan Lamb's score nine minutes from time sealing the win for Gloucester.

With England quartet Noon, Jonny Wilkinson, Toby Flood and Mathew Tait back in the side, facing some talented counterparts in the home side, the Falcons began the game well with the opening try when a long run from Matthew Burke ended with the captain offloading to Noon who went over from close range. The conversion went wide, as did two penalties soon after from Gloucester's Willie Walker. We were having a fair amount of possession and the backline looked dangerous in the Gloucester half, but it looked like we were going to go into the break behind as James Forrester scored from a scrum on 36 minutes, Walker converting.

However, Noon broke through again on half time and scored his second try, which Wilkinson converted for a 7-12 interval lead. Shame it wasn't full time yet.

In the second half Gloucester rallied and attacked at a much better pace than in the first 40, although honours were even initially with Wilkinson and Walker exchanging penalties. The hosts took the lead for the first time with a try from Jake Boer who ran past the only defender to score. Walker's conversion put Gloucester in front, but a penalty from Wilkinson saw us reclaim the lead with 15 minutes left.

But a third home try, scored by Lamb waltzing through a, for once, lax defence put us behind again 24-18 with Walker easily adding the conversion. The Falcons of course put in a big effort to try to win the game, with Carlos Nieto being sin-binned as we drove maul after maul, but just couldn't score the try they needed and eventually full time arrived.

So another poor away season passes, with only one win, at Sale, and several near misses amongst ten defeats. These need to be improved into wins, otherwise we will never really threaten the top of the table. In the meantime there is of course the European QF in Clermont-Auvergne, hope everyone going over has a great time.
