Saturday night's alright

God
By Leipziger September 30 2007
My head is sore, I can't speak properly, and I'm knackered. But I'm happy. Last night saw an exciting game in a hot atmosphere, and a superb performance by Matthew Burke who scored a try and two conversions to inspire the Falcons to a 19-12 victory over Harlequins and third place in the table.

The Falcons, starting with Lee Dickson and Russell Winter for the first time this season, were on the back foot for a lot of the first half as Quins played some fast expansive rugby, but their only points were two Chris Malone penalties and they suffered for Jim Evans was sin-binned for taking a man out in the air.

The Falcons came to life after the half hour when one of the two Geoffrey Parlings went over from close range on the right. Burke converting, and minutes later Tom May, who has been rejuvenated so far this season, capitalised on a spill by the Quins full-back to outpace the defence and score the second try. Burke's conversion put us well in charge of the scoreboard at half time.

The try was to be one of May's last actions of the night as he was replaced with Adam Dehaty at the break. Malone hit two penalties and missed a third to leave us a bit edgy, as Quins kept us back but again strong defence prevented the conceding of any tries. However when the break came, Steve Jones legged it up the field and a quick move was rounded off by Burke steaming in for the final try of the night, although his conversion hit the post.

Seven points ahead and not looking like conceding a try, the Falcons played out the last 15 minutes well as the 6,478 fans in attendance produced one of the better atmospheres Kingston Park has known, amd we mov into third place behind Gloucester and Harlequins who before last night had scored two 5-point wins so far this season.

On Friday we play promoted Leeds at home. Lets have both players and fans keep this good home start to the season going, in what should on paper be our easiest game of the season. I'm sure it won't turn out exactly that way though.
