Scotland Falcons through to finals

By Leipziger

If the Falcons were hoping that bussing in seven Scotland 7s squad members to add to one on trial and four academy lads would give them a decent chance of making the Premiership 7s finals, then it worked well.

Scotlandgate caused a bit of a stir among fans, and I was a bit miffed myself, but at the end of the day the team named got the job done and maintained the Falcons’ perfect record in Premiership 7s qualifiers. Three wins out of three and a fifth northern plate, next stop the Stoop!

On a strange evening for weather, the Falcons put Leicester to the sword 50-7 in the opening game, mirroring what the score will no doubt be when the Tigers visit Kingston Park in the Premiership this season. Sale and Worcester put up more resistance but in the end both were worn down by the Falcons’ superior experience and quality.

After a competitive beginning to the final game between our boys and the Worcester, a big home victory saw the Warriors’ points difference plummet and Sale were able to sneak the second finals spot for Friday night.

Of the players on show for the Falcons, Callum Chick really stood out I thought, obviously the 15-a-side game is a different thing but he looks to be quite a good ball carrier with a lot of strength and stamina.

Despite KP appearing a little quiet ahead of the 4pm kick-off, a crowd of over 5,000 were in attendance, plus a horse (drawing a carriage, presumably for the couple at the wedding at the ground last night). That’s a fairly good crowd, considering we’ve sometimes struggled to get 2,000 or 3,000 for friendlies in the past. We’ll never know how many were put off by Scotlandgate but clearly many weren’t.

It’s always good to get a new season started successfully, and perhaps never more so than in this longest of close seasons, with the Premiership kick-off still almost two months away. Good to get back to the ground and see friends too, and have a few drinks – which I was able to, having done this weekend’s long Great North Run training run yesterday morning rather than today. I noticed there’s Strongbow Dark Fruit on tap in the South Stand now – excellent for when one can’t face any more beer I find, though it goes down very easily!

So overall another good night of sevens, not as lively as Darlington last year perhaps but some good rugby, a few drinks and our team winning, job done.

Now for Georgia to start the 15-a-side season on Friday.
