Stuart Grimes joined the Falcons from Glasgow just before the World Cup in 1999, making his debut post-tournament in November, and has become, for me, one of the Falcons most important players. His performances alongside Doddie Weir in the Millenium season helped secure our Premiership survival, and then he was a member of the team that won the 2001 Tetley’s Bitter Cup.

Grimy began the 2001/02 season like a house on fire, scoring three tries in two home victories over Bristol and Leeds in October, and ended the season with six scores to his name. The next autumn he was greatly missed in November as we struggled to defeats against fellow relegation candidates Bristol, Bath and Saracens, but really came into his own alongside Mark Andrews in the second half of the season as we managed to survive in the top league.

2003/04 again saw Grimes absent until mid-November due to the World Cup, and it says a lot for his influence on his club that as soon as Scotland got knocked out, all Falcons could think about was how quickly we could get him back into the black shirt, and eventually he won his second English Cup winners’ medal in April 2004.

Stuart Grimes is a world-class forward who has the ability to take a pack of forwards or a lineout by the scruff of the neck and dominate when things are going badly, and is also a more than capable runner with ball in hand. It will be a travesty if he doesn’t at least make the Lions tour, if not the test side. I feel he would make an excellent captain for the Falcons, if he weren’t away with Scotland, for whom he has won 70caps, for a lot of the season. Whatever, we must hope that this underrated man stays a member of our squad for a long time to come.
