Valladolid away (06/12/03) - a memoir....

Caught the eye

Editor's Note: Going by the comments posted on the message board last week I'm gutted I didn't go to Valladolid. Despite losing 10 - 71 it sounds like Valladolid put on one heck of a party... Here are Seadog's post hangover recollections of the match!

Surprised

For the first 20 minutes I don’t think the Falcons crossed the VRAC 22m line certainly the play all seemed to be at my end with the VRAC players giving their all!!!!

The first big Falcon supporters cheer came having released the limits of the scoreboard as we watched the scorekeeper climb the ladder, then at 00-14 it appeared by mistake as 00-41, which of course caused another big cheer!!!

Did Rob have something to off load?

At half time I noticed a certain Mr Andrew rushing towards the changing rooms obviously with a few things on his mind he wished to off load! True the lads had not played badly it's just with who they where playing they should have been further in front.

Try fest!

Whatever Rob said it worked, Falcons came out with a bit of fire and it became a race of who is going to score the most number of tries but there where still some unselfish passes just yards from the line.

Epi - caught the eye

I can remember being shown the local paper with a good picture of Epi (my man of the match) off loading in the tackle. Live game memories of the second half are Dave Walder kicking and chasing and TOTALLY overturning the fullback (?), and some of Epi’s charges and subsequent passing as he went into the tackle and offloading after the event, he was back on the wing!

The last quarter was an exhibition of rugby skills and I’m sorry again Epi caught my eye; others would have noticed other players.

Final score Valladolid 10 - Newcastle Falcons 71

Smug reporter....

But hey this was a rugby away trip; I was one of those that stayed in Valladolid as opposed to going shopping in Madrid spent Sunday in Valladolid suffering along with the best (unfortunately didn’t make the Quin’s game) followed by another bout of hospitality in the VRAC supporters bar feeling rather smug that I had arranged my travel home that did not require a 5am departure from the hotel.
