Davey hails from South Shields – he attended Harton School - and has now graduated to the first team squad. At his former club, Westoe, he first played as an U12 and progressed from school rugby through the rugby development course at East Durham and Houghall Community College to the academy at Kingston Park. He was named in the RFU intermediate national academy squad in March 2004, and had been among only 16 players to be included in the first ever junior academy squad in August 2003, this being a group of players identified with the potential to go all the way through to the senior England side.

While still a teenager David appeared from the bench five times for the Falcons first team in the 2003-2004 season – his debut coming in a 19-17 home victory over Bath in late October 2003. An anterior cruciate knee ligament injury sustained while on England U19s World Cup duty ruled him out of most of the 2004-05 campaign. After a long rehab programme, which included returning to Westoe for game time and fitness, he came back to the Falcons first team for the end of the 2004-05 season to make six appearances. These included a first start, in the home defeat to Worcester in April 2005, this coming a week after he had appeared off the bench in the Heineken Cup Quarter-Final in Paris. However, a knee injury picked up in the final match of the season at Kingsholm ruled him out of the England squad for the U21 World Cup in Argentina.

Last season saw David notch-up another 12 appearances for the first team, including two starts. Having helped England U21s to the Grand Slam in 2006, he suffered a broken jaw in the final match of the competition against Ireland U21 (a game in which he scored a try), prompting Rob Andrew to slam the RFU for their handling of the injury, which prevented David finishing the season with the Falcons. He did however return to fitness in time to represent England in the U21 World Cup in France this summer.

Fact: David’s favourite food is steak.
