Beginning his third season at Kingston Park, Andy is a former pupil of St. Peter’s Comprehensive School in Bournemouth, who represented England at U18s before captaining the national U19s and U21s. Having started his career with a seven-year spell at Bath, he made more than 80 league appearances for the Recreation Ground outfit and while there gained his first full England cap (as a 21 year-old) against Australia at Twickenham in November 1997, in what was Clive Woodward's first match in charge. Despite the 15-15 result, he did not reappear in a white shirt again until a 48-19 win in San Francisco against the USA in June 2001. He also played for England (non-cap) against the New Zealand Barbarians at Twickenham in December 2003, with the English winning 42-17.
Andy joined the Falcons in the summer of 2004 from Rotherham, having spent the first few months of the 2003-04 campaign with Irish province Munster, appearing in the Celtic League after a transfer to Sale fell through. He moved to Rotherham just before Christmas 2003 and became joint vice captain. He made only six league starts for the Titans, including the last game of the 2003-2004 season against the Falcons (a 26-20 victory for our boys), in a side that also contained Luke Gross and Anthony Elliott.
Debuting as a replacement at Worcester in the first game of the 2004-05 season, Andy’s first start was the following week in a 33-18 victory against his old side at the Recreation Ground. Andy has notched-up 43 starts in two years at Kingston Park, with another 17 appearances from the bench. Just the one try has been forthcoming – in the crucial thumping of Sale in April - but the man from the south coast has been yellow carded four times.
Fact: Capped for England in SCW’s first game in charge.
