Schooled at Sedbergh in Cumbria, where he was a classmate of Phil Dowson, Macca joined the Falcons from Irish province Connacht in the summer of 2004. Prior to that he had been in the London Wasps Academy, where he won U21 honours at the 2002 World Cup in South Africa. He found his opportunities limited at Wasps and Rob Andrew brought the Londoner north, where he has proved a more than useful acquisition.
Macca has notched-up 57 appearances (36 starts) in two seasons, chipping in with nine tries, one on his debut against Worcester at Sixways on the opening day of the 2004-05 season. Last season, Mike endured a frustrating ten appearances from the bench as a replacement for Owen Finegan but his patience was finally rewarded as he made the No. 6 shirt his own for the last six games of the season, the first of those against his former side Connacht, a game in which he scored a superb try in a barnstorming performance. In fact he made something of habit of putting one over on his former employers last season, having also scored against Wasps, in the epic 17-15 home victory over the Champions in November 2005.
