A former Cambridge University Blue, Woodsy made his first team debut - from the
bench - while part of the Falcons Academy in a 30-30 draw with the Tykes at
Headingley in late March 2004. Cruelly he then missed the entire 2004-05 season
with a badly broken leg picked up during a Development Team match against
Northampton late in the 2003-04 campaign. After 18 months out he finally made
his comeback in the friendly against NEC Green Rockets in Tokyo in August 2005,
scoring with his first touch of the ball.
Ben certainly made his mark in the first team throughout the 2005-06 campaign,
making 13 starts – including an eye-catching display in his first start at
Franklin’s Gardens in September 2005 - and appearing a further 10 times as a
replacement. He grabbed his first Premiership try in the final game of the
season, the 56-19 rout of doomed Leeds Tykes, adding to two earlier scores in
the ECC, the first coming in the home tie with Borders in January 2006. His
club form earned him a place on the England Saxons Churchill Cup tour this
summer, and he was ‘Man of the Match’ against Canada, a game in which he scored
a try.
