Robbie is a product of the Northampton Saints academy system, having joined the club from Hertford in 2000. It followed a distinguished junior career when he played for Hertfordshire at every age group and went on to feature in the London Division 18 Group Clubs team and the England 18 Group Clubs side before signing professional forms. He made his Saints debut as an 18-year-old in January 2001. Toured Argentina with England A in the summer of 2002, scoring a try against the Pumas A team. Made his full England debut against Wales in the Six Nations two days after celebrating his 21st birthday in 2003, and played against Italy a fortnight later – these being his two full England caps to date. Picked for the England XV against the Barbarians in May 2004 but suffered a leg injury that prevented him taking his place on the 2004 Churchill Cup tour shortly afterwards.

Operating as specialist tighthead, Robbie signed for the Falcons in the summer of 2005 on a three year deal after making more than 90 first team appearances for Saints. Made 25 starts for the Falcons last season, his debut coming as a replacement at Sale on opening day, plus seven appearances as a replacement and notched 4 tries, including the crucial score against Leicester at Welford Road in the bad-tempered draw in October 2005. He toured Canada in the summer of 2006 with the England Saxons in the Churchill Cup.

Fact: Robbie was an exceptional field athlete as a youngster and won a silver medal in the discus as a member of the England athletics team that competed at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 2000.
