Tryless Leinster sent packing...
By Sea_point
October 5 2008
For all their fire-power and squad strength, Connacht sent a weakened Leinster selection packing after a gutsy performance in which they held the reigning champions try-less to secure a very victory by the smallest possible margin. To qualify the result, Connacht (a man down after 49 minutes) , this Leinster team was packed with full and A Internationals despite resting some of their big names...
Connacht 19 - 18 Leinster
Half-time: 9 - 9

Att: 3,000

Connacht upset their Irish provincial rivals Leinster 19-18 in their Magners League clash at the Sportsground.

The hosts staged the upset of the season so far as they heroically held off the defending champions. Ian Keatley came back to haunt his old province with a stupendously brave display - the fly-half kicking four penalties and converting Mike McCarthy's lone try to inspire Connacht to their first win over Irish opposition since December 2005.

With McCarthy having been controversially red-carded straight after his 44th-minute score, Michael Bradley's men required a real backs-to-the-wall effort to hold on to their lead.

But, after weathering a storm in which Leinster fluffed several potential try-scoring chances, the hosts' seven-man pack wound down the clock with a superb spell of possession rugby to frustrate the reigning champions. Wanting to bounce back from last week's reversal to Munster, Leinster threatened twice in the opening five minutes through Rob Kearney and Luke Fitzgerald.

And while Felipe Contepomi, making his 100th appearance for the visitors, did boot his side into a 9-3 lead, Connacht were making a game of the provincial derby. Contepomi, recovering from his kicking nightmare against Munster, cancelled out a Keatley strike to move Leinster 6-3 ahead in the 26th minute, before Connacht second row McCarthy was rather harshly sin-binned.

Referee George Clancy on the advice of fellow Munster-man Peter Fitzgibbon who ran the touchline adjudged that the former England Under-21 international had brought down a lineout and Contepomi landed the resulting kick for 9-3. But Connacht, with Johnny O'Connor impressing in front of the watching Ireland head coach Declan Kidney, battled back to 9-9 while still down a man - key man Keatley converted two more penalties before the break.

Five minutes into the second half, the westerners conjured up a bit of magic for only their third try of the campaign. O'Connor tore out of his half to begin a move in which Frank Murphy was involved twice.

Keatley then drew his man and put hooker Sean Cronin charging through before his one-handed offload sent McCarthy under the posts. But a dust-up ensued after the try sparked by an outrageous elbow to the head by Leinster captain Leo Cullen to Keatley who was rushing to join his celebrating colleagues. As some pushing and shoving ensued, McCarthy was spotted leading with his head on Rocky Elsom and the Australian unsurprisingly retaliated with a punch. Both players received yellow cards, meaning the try-scorer's night was over while Cullen the instigator of this bout of ill feeling walked away without any admonishment.

Keatley converted and crucially managed to trade penalties with Contepomi while both sides were down to 14 men. Leinster shunned an immediate shot at the posts as, with Elsom back, they pressed for a pushover try. But Connacht were not prepared to budge and the period of pressure was ended as after a scrum re-set scrum-half Keane was caught feeding the ball in crooked to thescrum.

Connacht were in no mood to give in, however, and although Contepomi landed a further brace of penalties, a try eluded them. Fitzgerald, Elsom and Cian Healy each failed to convert when in sight of the whitewash and after young Leinster flyhalf Jonathan Sexton (who was completely outplayed by his opposite number) pushed a drop goal shot wide, Connacht held on for a well deserved victory which moves them off the foot of the table.

I was surrounded by a group of Leinster supporter for most of the match and it was incredible to watch them fall into stunned silence as the game wore on - they must has stayed without moving for at least 2-3 minutes after the final whistle with a total look of incomprehension on their faces - hilarious. Fair play to the Leinster supporter who shook my hand and said well done. Boy that was sweet, I hope Leinster learn from this and kick-on and do well in the Heineken Cup by treating every game with the same merit and playing to their full potential.

Yeah actually, the Leinster team were pretty magnanimous after the final whistle too Shaggy and a few others went around searching out the Connacht lads in the on field crowd to shake their hands. Saying that, think it was the first time Shaggy was on camera during the game....[:wor kid:]

Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even.

What was also really pleasing to see was the young kids running after Connacht players for autographs rather than the Leinster guys - as someone who is involved in Youth rugby in the province I can't stess enough how important it is for young players to have have heros in Connacht colours to look up to and not guys in either the Red of Munster or the Blue of Leinster and to a lesser extent the White of Ulster.

I think Irish rugby can only benefit from having 4 competitive provinces.

Fair play to the lads. I am over the moon for them (and me!) Maybe we can get a few more sponsored players from this.

Lets get the facts right here Sean, Jug eared Cullen elbowed Ian Keatley into the head on the way into the try celebrations! What happened then was Mc Carthy sticking the head into Elsom who was doing f**K all. It was a really stupid thing to do, and on another occasion could have cost us a match. But anyhoo it didn't!

Great result for the lads in Green!

I thought Leinster was making a mistake not sending out their full squad to iron out things after going scoreless against Munster. Perhaps Cheika thought that match was just a blip because for the most part they played well but just didn't get the scores. Well Contepomi's kicking boots may be working again, but Leinster have now gone two games on the trot without a try. Perhaps they're a little concerned now heading to Edinburgh to start their HEC campaign.
